Castellia tuberculosa is the only known species within the Castellia genus, a group of plants belonging to the grass family.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Native to southern Europe, including Spain.
  • Possible native presence in the Canary Islands.
  • Also found in India.
  • Circum-Mediterranean distribution

Morphological Characteristics

  • Annual plant.
  • Culms (stems) are decumbent (lying along the ground with the tip ascending), ranging from 50 to 100 cm in length.
  • Leaf-sheath oral hairs are lacking.
  • Leaf-sheath auricles are falcate (sickle-shaped).
  • Ligule is an eciliate membrane.
  • Stems can reach up to 75 cm high.
  • Inflorescence (flower cluster) ranges from 4 to 26 cm in length.
  • Spikelets are ovate (egg-shaped), measuring 9 to 15 mm long.
  • Glumes (protective bracts of the spikelet) are glabrous (smooth), with the lower glume measuring 2.8 to 3.5 mm long and the upper glume measuring 3.5 to 5 mm long.
  • Inflorescences are in the form of racemes (elongated cluster of flowers).
