Carbonea Lichen

Carbonea is a genus of lichen-forming fungi belonging to the Lecanoraceae family.

Taxonomy and Nomenclature

  • Scientific Name: Carbonea (Hertel) Hertel
  • Common Name: Carbonea lichen
  • Family: Lecanoraceae
  • Phylum: Lichens
  • Class: Lecanoromycetes
  • Order: Lecanorales
  • Synonyms: Some species have synonyms. For example, Carbonea vitellinaria has the synonyms Lecidea vitellinaria Nyl. and Nesolechia vitellinaria (Nyl.) Rehm.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Carbonea species are widespread.
  • They can be found in regions such as the Greater Sonoran Desert, South America, Australasia, Turkey, Japan, Crimea, and polar and mountain ecosystems.
  • They typically grow on siliceous and calcareous rocks or on other lichens.

Ecological Role

  • Many Carbonea species are lichenicolous, meaning they grow on and parasitize other lichens. For example, Carbonea vitellinaria parasitizes Candelariella vitellina and Lecanora species, and Carbonea supersparsa grows on Lecanora polytropa. Carbonea vorticosa can be a parasymbiont.

Morphological Characteristics

  • Carbonea capsulata is described as an epilithic lichen, meaning it grows on the surface of rocks.

Quirky Facts

  • Some species of Carbonea are able to darken other lichens they parasitize.
  • Friedmann (1982) suggested that in some environments, no plant life except endolithic lichens could survive.

Further Information

  • USDA, NRCS provides distributional maps for some species, such as Carbonea vitellinaria.
  • ABRS published information on the lichens of Heard Island, including Carbonea phaeostoma.
  • ResearchGate features research on Carbonea species new to Turkey.
  • The Lichen Gallery of Leif &amp Anita Stridvall offers images of Carbonea vitellinaria.
