Bontia daphnoides, commonly known as wild olive, white alling, or Barbados Olive, is the only species within the genus Bontia. This plant belongs to the family Scrophulariaceae.

Distribution and Habitat

Bontia daphnoides is found in the USA (Florida), the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Isla Margarita, Jamaica, and Guyana (introduced), and Surinam.

Morphological Characteristics

It is described as an indigenous, quite rare tree of the Atlantic coast, often found close to mangrove habitats.

Interactions with Other Organisms

(-)-Epingaione has been isolated as a major lipophilic metabolite of Bontia daphnoides, which is the only member of the Myoporaceae family found in the West Indies.
