Taxonomy and Nomenclature
- Scientific Name: Asimina incana (W. Bartram) Exell
- Family: Annonaceae (custard apple family)
- Genus: Asimina Adans. (pawpaw)
- Order: Magnoliales
- Synonyms: Kral (1960) proposes that the proper name for the woolly-leaved pawpaw is A. speei'om.
Distribution and Habitat
- Native to the central and northern parts of Florida.
- Found in sandhills and flatwoods.
- Observed in Ocala National Forest, Marion County, FL.
Morphological Characteristics
- Deciduous shrub growing to approximately 5 feet high.
- New growth is reddish and covered with whitish, woolly fuzz.
- Leaves are hairy and 2 to 4 inches long.
- Flowers in the spring, with white to yellowish petals that are 3-7 cm long. The interior of its petals and its fuzzy leaves make this pawpaw easy to identify. The large, three-petaled white flowers appear in early spring as the new leaves are emerging.
- Perennial duration.
Interactions with Other Organisms
- Larval host for zebra swallowtail (Eurytides marcellus) and pawpaw sphinx (Dolba hyloeus) butterflies.
