Distribution and Habitat
- This lichen is found in the Greater Sonoran Desert.
- Occurs in Northwest Territories and northern Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba with disjunctions in Maine, Arizona, Colorado.
- Also found in Tasmania, the Aegean, China (Yunnan), and at high altitudes in continental Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic South.
- Found at Pointe du Van.
Morphological Characteristics
- The thallus is crustose, with milky-coffee to grey- or dark-brown areoles set on a black prothallus.
- Apothecia are black, irregular in shape, and lack thalline margins.
- Schaereria dolodes is a brown crustose lichen with black apothecium.

- It can serve as a host to lichenicolous fungi.
- The algal communities colonize the lichen thalli.
