Distribution and Habitat

Oligomeris linifolia is native to California and found elsewhere in North America. It has an intercontinental distribution between the arid regions of the Old World and southwestern regions. It is also found in Arizona and the Death Valley region of California.

Morphological Characteristics

  • Annual herb, erect and glabrous, somewhat fleshy in appearance.
  • Stems branching at the base, typically 1-3 dm high.
  • Leaves are linear, entire, often fascicled (clustered), 1-2.5 cm long. Flexuous, elongate, subacute.
  • Bracts are longer than the flower, subulate.
  • Flowers are whitish with barely visible petals

Quirky Facts

  • Oligomeris linifolia is noted for its intercontinental disjunction, a relatively rare pattern of distribution at the species level. This means it's found in widely separated arid regions of both the Old World and the Americas, despite limited mechanisms for seed dispersal.
