Distribution and Habitat
Arnica chamissonis is native to North America. It grows along meadows and creeks, ranging from the Southern California Mountains, through the Sierras to Alaska, and across to other regions of the United States.
Morphological Characteristics
- A perennial wildflower with single stems arising 20-100 cm high from long, nearly naked rhizomes.
- Can grow from 8-24 inches tall.
- Features 5-10 pairs of heart-shaped lower leaves.
- Can have 1-3 leafy stems.
- Possesses lance-shaped, hairy, grey-green leaves.
- Produces yellow flower heads in summer.
Interesting Relationships
- Arnica chamissonis is very similar to Arnica montana, although A. chamissonis is found in the United States and surrounding regions, while A. montana is found in Europe.
