Distribution and Habitat
Armeria arenaria is native to the Iberian Peninsula and is found along the French Mediterranean coastline. It's also found in siliceous Provence (France). It is a rare littoral species that grows in haloresistant plant communities. It prefers fixed sand dunes and coastal headlands, with a more inland distribution compared to A. maritima subsp. maritima. It is also present in Jersey, VC113 Channel Islands. Some subspecies, like Armeria arenaria subsp. segoviensis, are found at altitudes between 1350-2000 meters. The plant also grows on wide verges by the sea.
Morphological Characteristics
- Perennial herb.
- Armeria arenaria subsp. segoviensis has stems that are frequently numerous and erect, ranging from 25-65 cm in height.
- Leaves of Armeria arenaria subsp. segoviensis measure 40-120(180) x 2-12 mm.
- Leaves are generally wider than 3 mm, linear-lanceolate, with 3-7 veins.
- Leaves (a) 5-13cm x 3-14mm, lanceolate-linear-spatulate, with 3-7 veins.
