Distribution and Habitat

  • Found in North America.
  • Observed on limestone cliffs in the North Thompson Valley, Vavenby, British Columbia, Canada.
  • Also found in the Greater Sonoran Desert Region.
  • Reported in Northern Khorasan province, NE Iran and the Middle Urals, Russia.

Ecological Role

  • Lichens, including Anema, are fungi with internal symbionts capable of photosynthesis, allowing them to grow in environments where other organisms cannot.

Morphological Characteristics

  • Some species like Anema nodulosum, are squamulose saxicolous (growing on rock), found on calcareous-siliceous rain-tracks. The squamules are peltate, 1-2 mm high and 0.3-0.5 mm wide at the tip.
  • Thallus of some species is red-brown, granular-crustose or granular-squamulose on rock or alpine sod.

Interactions with Other Organisms

  • Anema nummularium has been found to host Chroococcidiopsis as a phycobiont.
