Distribution and Habitat
This moss has been found in various locations, including collections in the Al-Ghab plain (north-west Syria) and recorded in the British moss flora. It is also listed in the Grasafriorasafn (Icelandic botanical collection) at Laugaseti.
Morphological Characteristics
- Grows in scattered shoots or loose tufts.
- The capsule has an attenuated neck.
- Leaves can be falciform (sickle-shaped), with the base ovate-lanceolate and attenuate (tapering) to a fine point that may be slightly dentate (toothed).
- Some populations consist of unusually attenuate forms.
- Leaves are spirally twisted when dry, upper attenuated into a hair.
- Margins plane.
Interactions with Other Organisms
Entosthodon attenuatus may be found growing on soil well-shaded under overhanging areas, sometimes alongside herbs or in moss carpets in open areas of old copper-mine spoil. It can also be found on the sides of rocks covered with moss.
