  • Family: Poaceae (Grass family)
  • Group: Monocot
  • Synonyms:
    • D. decumbens

Distribution and Habitat

Digitgrasses (Digitaria sp.) are native to Africa. It has been introduced to and cultivated in other tropical and subtropical regions, including Hawaii (HI), and Puerto Rico (PR), and the lower 48 states (L48) of the United States.

Morphological Characteristics and Growth Habits

  • It is a tufted perennial summer-growing grass.
  • Forms an abundance of decumbent stems (stolons), which root at nodes.

Ecological Role

  • All genotypes of digit grass are tolerant of heavy grazing.
  • Regular grazing is necessary to maintain quality and to minimize disease incidence.

Soil Adaptation

  • Adapted to a wide range of soils, including friable sands, friable and hard setting loams, and friable cracking clays.
  • It does not thrive in heavy cracking clay soils or waterlogged conditions.
  • Adapted to low fertility soils.

Interactions with Other Organisms

  • Research has been conducted on the effects of Azospirillum inoculation on plant yield and nitrogen content of digitgrass.
  • Premier digit grass and Consol lovegrass can host on acidic soils.

Livestock

  • Digit grass is a palatable bunch grass and has no associated livestock disorders.
