Delphinium zalil, also known as Persian Zalil, is a yellow-flowered larkspur with a history of use in dyeing. It is closely related to Delphinium semibarbatum.

Taxonomy and Nomenclature

Distribution and Habitat

  • Grows naturally in mountainous areas, specifically in the northeast of Iran.
  • Also found in parts of Afghanistan and Khorasan.

Morphological Characteristics

  • Delphinium semibarbatum is a perennial plant growing to a height of 0.5 meters (1 ft 8 in) and a width of 0.3 meters (1 ft).
  • Stems are unbranched with long racemes of pale yellow flowers, approximately 3cm long.
  • Leaves are much divided into narrow segments.

Traditional Uses

  • Historically used as a dye plant for silk. It was exported through the Panjab region.
