Delphinium zalil, also known as Persian Zalil, is a yellow-flowered larkspur with a history of use in dyeing. It is closely related to Delphinium semibarbatum.
Taxonomy and Nomenclature

Distribution and Habitat
- Grows naturally in mountainous areas, specifically in the northeast of Iran.
- Also found in parts of Afghanistan and Khorasan.
Morphological Characteristics
- Delphinium semibarbatum is a perennial plant growing to a height of 0.5 meters (1 ft 8 in) and a width of 0.3 meters (1 ft).
- Stems are unbranched with long racemes of pale yellow flowers, approximately 3cm long.
- Leaves are much divided into narrow segments.
Traditional Uses
- Historically used as a dye plant for silk. It was exported through the Panjab region.
- The Indian dye stuff asbarg is derived from Delphinium zalil.
