Green Flatsedge, scientifically known as Cyperus virens, is a common plant found in various wet environments. It is also sometimes referred to as Green Flat Sedge.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Occurs almost always under natural conditions in wetlands, but occasionally found in non-wetlands.
  • Found in most counties of peninsular Florida.
  • Also found in the southern United States, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Jamaica, and Guatemala.
  • Associated with damp depressions in upper areas.

Morphological Characteristics

  • This flatsedge can be an annual or perennial plant, depending on the species.
  • Some flatsedges are summer annuals, growing about 2-6" tall.
  • Culms (stems) are up to 4" long, light green, hairless, and usually 3-angled.
  • Leaves develop along the lower half of the culm; blades are 4-18" long and 2-10 mm across, medium green, and glabrous, with a deep furrow.
  • The height of C. iria plants varies from 8 to 60 cm.
  • C. iria roots are numerous, short, and yellowish-red. The culms are tufted, triangular, glabrous, green and 0.6-3.0.
  • Cyperus eragrostis has tall, erect stems, 10–90 centimetres (3.9–35.4 in) in height and long, thin, pointed leaves.
  • Leaves of rice flatsedge are dark green, shiny, and linear in outline but tapering to a point.
  • Flower Color is Green, Yellow or Brown.
  • Flower Arrangement: Spike.

Interactions with Other Organisms

  • Rice flatsedge is considered a weed of container ornamentals, nurseries, landscapes, and turf.
