Distribution and Habitat
Cyperus compactus is native to Western Australia and found in tropical Asian countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, China and Malaysia. It is also distributed in Africa, the Western Indian Ocean, and Madagascar. Within China, it can be found in South-Central China, Southeast China, Hainan, and Tibet. The species has also been observed in the Philippines. Specifically, confirmed in Mindanao (Agusan del Sur province), Luzon (Isabela Province), and Palawan (Palawan Province).
Morphological Characteristics
Cyperus compactus is a perennial sedge, with short rhizomes. The culms (stems) can grow up to 100 cm tall, are round and slender. The plant has basal leaves, few in number, linear and acuminate, measuring 20-65 cm x 0.4-0.8 cm. The inflorescences appear as clusters of spikes supported by long bracts.
Ecology
