The Okeechobee gourd, scientifically known as Cucurbita okeechobeensis, is a rare and endangered plant native to Florida. It's also referred to as the Indian Pumpkin.
Considerations for Pets
As a vine, the Okeechobee Gourd uses tendrils for climbing. While not inherently dangerous, these tendrils can potentially become entangled with small animals or cause minor tripping hazards.

Distribution and Habitat
- Endemic to Florida, primarily around the shores and islands of Lake Okeechobee and along the St. Johns River.
- Historically found in the pond apple (Annona glabra) forests south of Lake Okeechobee and in Alligator nests among the Pond Apple orchards.
- Now rare due to habitat conversion for agriculture and poor water management practices.
