Distribution and Habitat
- Native to the eastern Himalaya, specifically in Bhutan and adjacent areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
- Also found in south Tibet.
- Grows at elevations up to 9,000 feet.
Morphological Characteristics
- Evergreen conifer with a narrowly pyramidal shape.
- Can grow to heights of 40 to 60 feet (20-45 meters), sometimes taller.
- Features soft, blue-green foliage with a weeping habit, where the branches cascade downwards.
- The foliage is described as aromatic.
Quirky Facts
- Some consider the Kashmir Cypress to be the most beautiful and graceful of all cypresses and perhaps all conifers.
- A very old Kashmir Cypress, over 200 years old and the largest example in Europe, once stood outside a villa but was uprooted in a storm in 2006.
- The cone pattern of the Kashmir Cypress has been associated with Paisley shawl designs.
