Distribution and Habitat

Cololejeunea minutissima is a pantropical liverwort occurring all over the world in a variety of habitats. It has been observed in locations such as Dorset and Berkshire in the UK, specifically at Whiteknights and Greenham Common. Bollogas near Newlyn in 1841 is also noted. Some records mention its presence in Worcester Co., Maryland, USA and Misiones. It is considered a Southern-temperate Hyperoceanic element.

Morphological Characteristics

  • The shoots are slender, up to 4 mm long and 0.5 mm wide.
  • Perianths look like 5-pointed stars emerging from dense patches of shoots.

Ecology

This liverwort grows mainly on western hazels and can be found on leaning trunks of small smooth-barked Ash trees within narrow woodland belts on exposed south-west-facing hillsides.

Interactions with Other Organisms

Cololejeunea minutissima grows with the moss Ulota calvescens (balding pincushion moss) on western hazels.
