Coscinodon cribrosus, also known as Sieve-tooth Moss or coscinodon moss, is an uncommon moss species with a wide distribution.

Taxonomy and Nomenclature

  • Scientific Name: Coscinodon cribrosus (Hedw.) Spruce
  • Family: Grimmiaceae
  • Synonyms: Grimmia cribrosa Hedw., Grimmia lawiana J.H. Willis (transferred to Coscinodon lawianus)
  • The species was initially placed in the genera Grimmia and Weissia before being assigned to Coscinodon by Richard Spruce in 1849.

Distribution and Habitat

  • Coscinodon cribrosus is known from widely disjunct sites across North America.
  • It's also found in other locations, including old quarry faces with slate cliffs.
  • Another species in this Genus, Coscinodon arctolimnius ssp. higuchi, is native to California.
